Wates Group is one of the largest privately-owned construction, development and property services companies in the UK, winners of Building’s ‘Major Contractor of the Year’ and recipient in 2016 of Queen's Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development, for the second time in their history.
Established in 1897, and now in the fourth generation of family ownership, Wates’ family shareholders are committed to the future of the business, growing the Wates Group in a sustainable way over the long term, with a view to handing over to the next generation.
Supporting community investment
Wates is one of just 50 companies to hold the Business in The Community (BiTC) Community Mark - the UK’s only national standard for community investment - being reaccredited in 2016 with a 94% BiTC CSR index score. In 2016, they employed almost 100 apprentices and supported over 1000 young people through their award-winning Building Futures programme.
Commitment to Social Enterprise
Wates employs around 4,000 people and works with more than 10,000 supply-chain operatives and SME partners to successfully deliver their projects throughout the UK.
In 2016, they launched the industry’s first national Social Enterprise brokerage in partnership with Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) and were Highly Commended in the Buy Social Market Builder Awards. In 2016, 74% of their sites employed a Social Enterprise and they spent a total of £2.13m with the sector.
